THE BAHAMAS
The Bahamas is comprised of a chain of over 700 picturesque islands in the Atlantic Ocean, situated just south east of Florida. Its capital is Nassau on the main island of New Providence. Listed below are five of the most beautiful places in the Bahamas that you can explore when vacationing there ....
ATLANTIS / PARADISE ISLAND
Atlantis Resort is a luxurious hotel located on Paradise Island. The distinctive pink building rises above the the skyline beckoning its guests to come ashore. There are many exciting activities to enjoy, such as the Aquaventure Water Park which spans 141 acres. This park has been nominated by TripAdvisor as one of the top 25 water parks in the world. If you prefer to mingle with the dolphins, Dolphin Cay is the ideal spot. There, visitors can swim with the well-trained dolphins and savor this one-of-a-kind experience. Before you retire for the evening, you are welcome to sip a cocktail in the lounge or shake a leg at the Aura Nightclub.
GRAND BAHAMA
Grand Bahama Island is located in the north eastern region of the island chain. This island is a natural paradise as it is home to 18 species of birds that are unique to the Bahamas. In addition to this, visitors can explore the Petersen Cay National Park or dive and explore the huge underwater cave system. For history buffs, touring some of the old settlements, like Pinder’s Point or William’s Town, will be ideal activities.
BIMINI
Bimini is composed of three islands: North Bimini, South Bimini and East Bimini. Bimini is considered to be the fishing capital of the Bahamas and big game fishing is a regular activity in the surrounding waters. As Bimini is quite close to Florida, many visitors travel to the islands to engage in fishing, scuba diving and snorkelLing. Bimini is also home to many shipwrecks, making the area a fascinating place to explore underwater. One of the most popular shipwrecks is the SS Sapona which occurred back in 1926. Bimini was also once the home of famous author Ernest Hemingway, who wrote The Old Man and The Sea.
ANDROS ISLAND
Andros Island is the largest island in the Bahamas. It boasts a huge barrier reef which is 190 miles long and extends more than 6,000 feet below the ocean. This is conducive to lots of coral growing in the reef and this encourages a flourishing fish population. Incidentally, Andros is known as the bone-fishing capital of the world. Coupled with secluded beaches, this destination is a popular choice for those who appreciate a quieter holiday filled with tours of the natural marine habitats. In addition to this, Andros is not as developed as some of the other islands in the chain.
GREEN TURTLE CAY
As the name suggests, this island got its name from the green turtles that used to inhabit the waters surrounding this cay. It is located close to Great Abaco, one of the main outer islands in the chain, and the main town is called New Plymouth. Visitors can walk around the village in 15 minutes – it’s that tiny! The island is known for its lovely sandy beaches and fishermen ply their lobster trade on the island. Green Turtle Cay is truly a nature lover’s paradise.
