Alongside Dubrovnik, Hvar is the most popular destination for boaters. The island of sunshine, beautiful beaches, great restaurants and peaceful coves. To put it simply, it is one of the most beautiful islands in the world. Except for the town of Hvar, Stari Grad has been a favourite destination for boaters for more than 2400 years. It can be said that the “Stori Grod”, as it is known among the locals, was the first sailing town in Croatia. The reason for this is the bay which pierces the heart of the city like a spear. The bay, a few miles long, is one of the safest natural ports of the Adriatic. Its V shape offers protection from all the winds except for the north-western one, and it is specifically this wind that is responsible for the popularity that this bay enjoys among boaters. The mistral wind, which begins blowing sometime before noon, becomes gradually stronger until sunset, when it dies down almost completely. It serves as a driving force for boaters, windsurfers and kite surfers. They are easily recognized by their wide smiles. The mistral is known as a pleasant summer wind, which blows with uniform speed and does not change its direction. It fits into the picture of Stari Grad perfectly, with its dreamy thousand-year-old houses.

Boaters will find it useful that a restaurant where they can relax is open during the summer. On your way to Stari Grad, after leaving Tiha, you will approach Zavala. This spacious and deep cove has an anchoring area, a restaurant is open there in the summer, and the position of the sun enables sunlight to shine into the cove late into the evening. Before entering Stari Grad, you should also visit the Arkada cove, which offers a peaceful anchoring area, with a hotel complex nearby. You can take a taxi boat to the town. The coves in the southern side of the Stari Grad nautical treasure chest are smaller and more intimate. The first one is Gračišće, which has a beautiful pebble beach and a small dock approachable with a dinghy. You can spend a day on the beach in the shade of a thick pine forest with the sounds of cicadas in the background. Maslinica is also noteworthy, as it is the only sand beach in the bay. It will be especially interesting to boaters sailing with children. Most of the coves on the southern side are shaded in the afternoon, making them suitable for people who do not like spending too much time sunbathing. If you want to spend the night in the town itself, Stari Grad has many docking berths, and anchoring is possible in the centre of the bay. Over the last several years, boaters have been flocking here, because there is more than enough room for everyone, and the port is full on stormy days. In such weather conditions, it is best to spend the day in one of the best natural covers on the Adriatic and wait for the weather to calm down.
